It was 8:30 PM, and each of our volunteers was spending Children's Day with family or friends. The phone rang, and our partners at the Cluj Salvamont-Salvaspeo Public Service (mountain rescue) were asking for our help in searching for a 71-year-old woman who had gone missing a few hours earlier while picking mushrooms with some friends. Eight CST volunteers with seven search dogs joined search teams made up of representatives of the Police, the Gendarmerie, ISU Cluj (the Cluj Emergency Inspectorate), Salvamont and CERT (a volunteer emergency-response team). The search began from the spot where the woman had last been seen. After an hour of searching in the dark, a message came over the radio that made us all happy. The woman had managed to make her way out to a county road, some distance from where she had last been seen, and had been picked up by an ambulance. We called off the search and, to reward the dogs, set up a small exercise in which each dog got the chance to find a "victim". Everything ended well, and everyone involved in the search headed home.
