On 9 July 2017, at 21:45, our emergency phone rang. The sister of a 17-year-old boy, who had already been missing for 24 hours from Ocna Șugatag, was asking for our help in searching for him. Within a few minutes we already knew that 6 CST volunteers had managed to convince their bosses to give them a day off to take part in the search. We announced that we would be on site at 8 the following morning.
After very few hours of sleep, the team from Cluj (Simona, Silvia, Călin and Oana) joined up with those coming from Orăștie and Alba Iulia (Grațian and Tibi), and we set off from Cluj at 4:15. Three hours later we arrived in Ocna Șugatag, ready to get to work. We brought 7 dogs with us: Diamond, Yukan'na, Morris, Arik, Dino, Didi and Check. After a brief reconnaissance of the area and gathering a bit more information, we began the search together with the Police, ISU, the German Shepherd Club of Baia Mare, the Border Police and local residents.
About 35 people were involved in the search, which covered forests, gardens, vacant lots, the area around the lakes and ponds, and even quieter streets. Throughout the day, pieces of information of varying credibility came in, which, together with the Police and the other professionals involved, we tried to filter and act on with checks. After more than 8 hours of difficult searching (excessive heat and plenty of distractions for the dogs), and with no new, plausible information requiring dog searches of other areas, we decided to withdraw.
The Police investigation will continue in search of new leads, as will the searches involving divers and other means.
